Strengthening plane frames with steel plates

This study aims to present the concepts and the working principles of steel plate systems that restrain displacements; prevent or mitigate damage in structures exposed to an earthquake, which also provide additional rigidity and damping to structures. The effects of steel plates on 5-story and 10-story steel buildings are examined. The first section of the study entails general information about systems that protect buildings from earthquakes. The significant details that need to be taken into account when designing steel plate systems; the features they add to buildings as well as their applications are studied thoroughly. In the second section of the study, the Newmark-β method, which is used for numerical solution of buildings behavior,is explained. An example showing how steel plates on plane frames can be modeled is chosen to present the relevant information whereas selected building models are displayed alongside numerical applications. Finally, general results are presented by interpreting the results of the analyses conducted in this study.
