Comparison on Thermal Impact of Vertical and Rooftop Greenery with a Similar Plant Palette

  This study investigates the thermal performance of urban greenery systems being used in a vertical (green wall) and horizontal (green roof) array.One green roof plot and four vertical racks were built on the rooftop of the School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore.Plants were placed on two vertical racks, one facing the east and the other facing the west, while.the other two vertical racks were cladded with concrete panels.The plants belonging to the same species-sphagneticola trilobatta, were used for both green wall and green roof setups.Conduction of this study was based on monitoring the ambient air temperature and mean radiant temperature and measurements of some functional attributes of plants, such as shrub albedo and plant evapotranspiration rate.On top of that, the data analysis was carried out on typical sunny and clear days.Results have shown that when plants of the same species are used, there is a higher potential of green roofs than green walls in terms of reducing outdoor mean radiant temperature.The same plant species leads to lower albedo and higher plant evapotranspiration rate while they are installed vertically.It is also demonstrated that that the potential for building surfaces being retrofitted with vertical greenery can be assessed on the basis of objective criteria such as exposure level of solar radiation and functional attributes of the plants.Data derived from temperature measurements suggests that the retrofitting of vertical greenery should be prioritized for westward-facing walls, given the evidence of high potential of temperature reduction.
