Investigation of the Thermal Effects of Green Roof on Outdoor Microclimate in Hot and Humid Area
Green roof has been recognized as a complement of urban greening and an ecological solution to mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects. The benefits of green roof in cooling and energy conservation at the building scale have been identified by previous studies, but some quantitative data of the wider influence on neighbourhood microclimate are still needed in the context of hot and humid area. Therefore, a field measurement was conducted in Chongqing to investigate the green roofs effects on outdoor microclimate. From the derived data, it has been verified that the thermal benefits of green roof are not restricted to rooftops, but extended to the neighbourhood microclimate. In addition, green roof has been found as effective approach to improve the air humidity significantly. The findings have demonstrated that the large-scale installation of green roof could notably mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect and achieve more comfort of thermal environment for urban residents.
