Water resource benefits of power interconnection using virtual water methods
The global water demand and supply situation is getting severe nowadays, due to the water shortage and uneven distribution of water resources. The water demand in the power generation accounts for the highest proportion in the energy sector. With cross-country and cross-continental power grid interconnection, electricity trading cross countries becomes reality and creates a new opportunity to re-allocate water resources. This paper expands virtual water concept and proposed a generalized virtual water flow of power system to accurately estimate water resource benefits of clean power transmission under the grid interconnection from both production and consumption side.By defining water scarcity index as a price mechanism indicator, benefits of water resources allocation through power grids interconnection are evaluated.Taking AsiaEurope-Africa interconnection scenario as an example, the total water saving is 88.95 million m3 by 2030 and 337.8 million m3 by 2050, showing that grids interconnection could promote the development of renewable energy and achieve greater water resources benefits.
