Installation of two lightning test facilities in Rwanda to assess the lightning risk
In the past, INDELECs technology regarding direct lightning protection has been tested both in very high voltage laboratories and in in-situ tests sites. It made it possible to continuously improve the products and to assess both its efficiency and reliability, in simulated environment and under natural conditions. From this point forward, we installed our products in the district of Rutsiro, Rwanda. In this particularly interesting region of the country situated in the middle of Africa, bearing one of the highest keraunic density in the world, local lightning data are scarce, so thanks to our reliable products, we can rely on our results. The main goal of these installations is to document the storm activity and the strikes occurrence in this region. This leads to the other goal that aims to assess the need of lightning protection in order to protect the local population and to reduce the amount of both human casualties and structure damages each year. This paper describes the installations and its global features in conjunction with the data acquired by our products, thus giving clues to evaluate the risks encountered by the population.
