Alarm evaluation methods for Thunderstorm Warning Systems

Thunderstorm Warning Systems (TWS) measure different physical phenomena related to lightning using diverse techniques. There are mainly two technologies of Thunderstorm Warning Systems (TWS) on the market: the first one evaluates local conditions to provide direct information about the risk of lightning by measuring electrostatic fields. The other one is based on remote lightning detection and location, giving an alarm depending on where lightning is occurring. Both types of TWS can be configured in order to adapt the alarms to the needs of each installation or user, providing different results in terms of effective alarms, duration of the alarms, non-detected risk situations among others. This paper focuses on TWS based on electrostatic field measurement, showing the latest methods to optimize the reliability of these systems and the obtained results in real installations.
