LIGHTNING PROTECTION OF AIRCRAFT USING COMPOSITE MATERIALS
This paper describes the use of modelling to investigate the transient distribution of lightning currents in a layered carbon fiber composite (CFC) material with fasteners and joints, as bolted joints are often the weakest part of the structure. The results of the simulations are compared with experimental data to validate the proposed model, and a good correlation is found. As the sparking threshold for composite structures used in wing fuel tanks varies, it is essential to understand how high currents flow through composite structures in an aircraft.
