A new and unified approach for calculating the protected volume of different lightning air terminals Electrostatic Contour-Rolling Sphere Method (EC-RSM)
The protected volume of the any lightning air terminal is the main parameter that defines its efficiency when it is installed on a structure that requires protection.There are several types of lightning air terminals and different methods to place them on a structure, where the main aim is to prevent damages due to direct lightning strikes.The prescriptive guidelines to design an external lightning protection system are compiled in the lightning protection standards where both, physical considerations and empirical validation are considered.Lightning protection standard IEC 62305 is focused on conventional lightning protection systems and several national lightning protection standards such as UNE 21186, NF C17-102, NP 4426, NC 1185 among others, are focused on ESE-based lightning protection systems.In these standards 4 different air terminal positioning methods (ATPMs) are defined.Each of the ATPMs has a different protected volume so, in practice, the designer is the one who selects the ATPM and consequently the protected volume, what does not make sense.However, the empirical results are in good agreement with the expected, proof of this is the significant absence of damages or complaints.This paper is aimed to explain why the several ATPMs contained in the standards are considered as correct even though their protected volumes are in fact not the same.To this end, electrostatic approaches have been carried out under the point of view of lightning attachment physics in order to make compatible the different standardized ATPMs, considering that all of them offer, in practice, good results.
