Influence of corona around lightning rods on strike probability as assessed in a HV laboratory
This paper presents the results of an investigation into the influence of corona formation processes at the tips of lightning rods, measured by the probability of the rods being struck by high-voltage discharges.Experiments were carried out using a configuration consisting of a vertical high-voltage rod electrode and two earthed rod electrodes with spherical and conical tips, simulating lightning rods with different tip radii. The experiments show that corona around the tips of the earthed electrodes does not increase the probability of the electrode being struck, until a critical electric field strength is reached along with a corresponding critical corona current.
