Study on the relationship between 2D pattern and 3D shape of V-shape pleat in apparel design
V-shape pleats are widely used to improve the function and 3D shape of apparel.Current studies have presented the usefulness and generic knowledge regarding the pleats, but they are absent in delivering details of designing pleats in apparel.This paper presents a work with overall objective to clarify the relationship between the 2D pattern of V-shape pleat and its 3D shape.To achieve this overall objective, several experiments and geometrical analysis have been conducted.There are two contributions out of this work: 1) finding the mathematical relationship between the 2D pattern of V-shape pleat and its 3D shape for both single V-shape pleat and combined pleats, which provides knowledge in designing a V-shape pleat in the 2D pattern and its consistent 3D shape in a practical way;and 2) formulating a reference for studying on other types of pleats, such as twisted pleats.
