Dr.Benito C.Tan, Our Friend and Editor --in Memory of His Great Contribution to Chinese Bryology
Since China opened the door to the world in the 1980s, Dr.A.Touw as among the first foreign bryologists to visit China, then Chinese bryologists started to go abroad and joined international symposia later. In 1983, Dr.S.Hattori, as the chairman of the World Bryological Congress, sent a formal invitation letter to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We organized the first bryological delegation including Profs.C.Gao, M.-Q.Zhang, P.-J.Lin and me, then I was appointed to be responsible for the delegation while attending the World Bryological Congress held in Tokyo in May of 1983.When we arrived at the auditorium, a handsome Asian-face middle aged man stood by the entrance, and immediately we shook hands and greeted each other. This was the first glimpse of Dr.Benito C.Tan in my memory.Except very fluent English, Benito also spoke Mandarin very well, and he helped us to meet a series of international bryologists during the Congress. We also worked with Benito at the herbarium of the Hattori Botanical Laboratory after the Congress, and he gave us a great surprise that he could also fluently communicate with the staff of the lab in Japanese.
