A New Theory of Human Motivation and its Application in Senior Care
The publication of Abraham H.Maslow paper A Theory of Human Motivation in 1943 (Abraham, 2000) gave us the (only) model of thehierarchy of human needs that has since dominated psychology as well as business management, human resources management and even health care for 75 years.It is the basis of all care for the elderly with dementia sofar.Over the last decades huge steps have been made in Cognitive Science that result in the urgent need to update Maslows legacy in order to enable modem care for the elderly with dementia.Also the science behind Mind-Body Medicine, even epigenetics, along with the original nuancing remarks given by Maslow himself in 1943,lead up to an updated theory of human motivation and corresponding hierarchy of human needs. This paper draws the conclusions and also introduces the new model Hierarchy of Needs.
