Egypt Handicrafts: the Art and the Heritage

Egypt population has faced innumerable challenges related to the maintenance of their culture and traditional ways of living including earning a livelihood. In this process of re-adjustment, the rich cultural heritage of the local communities has suffered, of particular concerning the general neglect of art and handicraft production as the community adapted their lifestyles to cope with their new environment.Egyptian arts, crafts and folklore have been known to embody and reflect the history and beliefs of this ancient people. The situation is such that very few persons below the age of twenty years are knowledgeable of these traditional arts and their associated folklore and history.Currently, members of the older generation with the knowledge and skills are passing away. The government recognized the potential for a major loss of the cultural wealth with the passing of this older generation and is seeking effective ways of stemming this loss.A feasible approach is to facilitate opportunities for the older generation to educate and train interested members of the Younger generation. In an attempt to resuscitate Egyptian handicraft skills, involve young Egyptian women in income generating activities and improve basic literacy, the project proposed the conduct of a nine-month pilot program to transfer skills and traditional knowledge from senior to younger women.
