Native American Traditions in the Southwest:Yaqui, Apache, and Hopi Continuity in A Changing and Challenging World
Three Native peoples of the American Southwest, the Pascua Yaqui, White Mountain Apache and Hopi all exemplify the power of cultural persistence. They each present distinctive solution to coping in a changing and sometimes threatening world.Yaqui customs integrated into Spanish Christian ceremony, thereby surviving potential extinction. The Apache Mountain Spirit Dance sustains ritual balance in a progressive society. The Hopi ceremonies demonstrate both a ritual and an historical constancy. These three tribes offer models of cultural continuity, despite conquest and oppression and the dominance of other cultures. The tenacious retention of ceremonies and specifically ritual dances evoke a most powerful and enduring expression of these indigenous peoples.
