DEVELOPMENT AND PROPERTIES OF APOCYNUM VENETUM BAST FIBER REINFORCED POLYLACTIC ACID COMPOSITES

Green composite materials have received great importance due to the exceptional properties offered by natural fibers. The wild shrubs have been regarded as waste; however,it is a great source of cellulose which can become an abundant and cheaper source of textile fibers. This study involved the preparation, fabrication, and assessment of biodegradable natural fiber composites. This study was carried out by using Apocynum Venetum(AV)plants bast fiber as a reinforcement material for a biodegradable composite. The AV bast fiber was extracted from the stem of AV plant and the two groups of AV bast fibers were used including untreated and treated bast fibers with NaOH solution for its surface treatment to improve the fiber-matrix interface.Unidirectional woven fiber mats were prepared using hand weaving machine for the reinforcement material of composites. The polyester yarn was used in weaving(2%),while the ratio of fiber/matrix percentage was 30/68.For fabricating a composite the matrix selection was Poly-lactic Acid(PLA and was done in a hot press molding machine using 5mm thick steel mold plate, the stacking sequence was PLA-AV-PLA-AV-PLA.The mechanical and morphological properties of both groups of composite panels were analyzed.
