Study of the Oxidation Resistance of MgO-C Refractories

Magnesia-carbon (MgO-C) refractories with different graphite contents were prepared using magnesia and flake graphite as the main raw materials, metal aluminum powder as the antioxidant and resin as the binder. The effects of graphite content, oxidation temperature and time on the oxidation resistance of MgO-C refractories were studied. The results show that with increasing graphite content, the bulk density (BD) and cold crushing strength (CCS) of oxidized MgO-C refractories decreased, and the apparent porosity (AP) increased. Meanwhile, the mass loss rate increased and the oxidation rate decreased as graphite content increase. At 1400℃,the longer the holding time, the higher the oxidation rate and mass loss rate achieved.while at 1600℃,the holding time hadlittle effect on the oxidation rate and mass loss rate. The properties of MgO-C refractories after oxidation at 1600℃ were better than those of MgO-C after oxidation at 1400℃,which is mainly due to the indirect oxidation of graphite at 1600℃.
