Oxidation Behavior of β-SiAlON-Al2O3 Composites Under Thermal Stress

  β-SiAlON-Al2O3 composites were prepared using tabular alumina aggregates and fines,ultra fine alumina powder,Si powder and Al powder as starting materials,resin as binder,and then fired at 1450℃ for 72h in N2 flowing atmosphere.The effects of thermal stress and thermal stress cycles on oxidation behavior of β-SiAlON-Al2O3 composite at high temperature were investigated.The results show that thermal stress has great influence on oxidation resistance of β-SiAlON-Al2O3 composite.Weight gain increases of samples at different temperature(900-1300℃) under thermal stress in contrast to that without thermal stress,and weight gain increases with increase of thermal stress and thermal stress cycles.Thermal stress promoting oxidation of β-SiAlON-Al2O3 composite is attributed to protective oxidation film broken and micro-cracks generating under thermal stress,which provide passages for O2 entering into the inner of samples.Besides,the oxidizing products are changed under thermal stress,and thermal stress promotes amorphous SiO2 convert into quartz.
