Effect of the Calcium Aluminate Cement Addition on the Performances of the Mullite Foam Ceramics
Mullite foam ceramics were prepared by direct-foaming method using white clay and alumina as raw materials, and the calcium alumina cement(CA)as binding agent.Effect of the CA addition on the phase compositions, microstructures and properties of the foam ceramics were investigated through X-ray diffractometer(XRD)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results showed that with the increasing of the CA addition from 0 wt%to 8 wt%,the viscosities of the initial slurries decreased, the porosities of the specimens improved, the thermal conductivities decreased, and the compressive strengths improved first and then decreased. The optimized product was a specimen with 4.0 wt%CA which had a high porosity of 80.8%,a low bulk density of 0.56 g/cm3 and a lower thermal conductivity 0.232 W/(mK)(800 ℃).
