Effect of in situ Formed Acicular Mullite Whiskers on the Thermo-mechanical Properties of Alumina-mullite Refractories

  In situ synthesized mullite whiskers were used to improve the thermo-mechanical properties of alumina-mullite refractory samples by uniaxial pressing using tabular alumina,fused mullite,reactive α-Al2O3 powders,and silica fumes as raw materials.The phase composition and microstructure were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM),respectively.The formation mechanism of acicular mullite whiskers and its influence on thermal shock resistance for alumina-mullite materials were discussed.The experimental results showed that the acicular mullite whiskers with the length to diameter ratio of 30~50 presented in the samples sintered at 1550 ℃ for 3 h with addition of 3% AlF3·3H2O and 5% Al(OH)3 powders.At the same condition,the CMOR of the sample powders was increased up to 14.66 Mpa and the residual CMOR ratio of the sample was about 83.47% after quenching in compressed air at 1100℃ for 3 cycles.
