Effect of Micro-sized CaCO3 Addition on Properties of Al2O3-Spinel Castables

  Tabular alumina,fused spinel and reactive alumina were used as the main raw materials to prepare Al2O3-spinel castables with the introduction of micro-sized CaCO3(respectively adding 0,0.5 mass%,1.0 mass%,1.5 mass%and 2.0 mass%).The specimens were pre-heated at 110 ℃,1 000 ℃ and 1 550 ℃ respectively.Permanent linear change(PLC),hot modulus of rupture(HMOR)at 1 400 ℃ and thermal shock resistance(TSR)were tested.Also microstructure and phases of specimens was analyzed by SEM and XRD respectively.The results show that with micro-sized CaCO3 addition,micro-sized calcium hexaluminate grains(CaO·6Al2O3,hereinafter referred as CA6)generated in situ are distributed uniformly in matrix of castables,which embraces the spinel(MgO·6Al2O3,hereinafter referred as MA)and corundum grains,enhances the links of corundum-spinel-CA6 in matrix of castables.The formed three-dimensional network of CA6 in the castables influences the microstructure and consequently improves hot strength,volume stability and TSR of the castables.
