Development and Application of Chromium-free Magnesia Spinel Refractory Used in RH Refining Furnace
First,chromium-free magnesia spinel refractories used in RH refining furnace were prepared by the traditional production process, using magnesia(5~3mm,3~1mm,1~0mm and ≤ 0.088mm),fused spinel powder as the main raw material, phenolic resin as binder, and were applied in RH bottom slot at some steel. The erosion mechanism of the used bricks was characterized and analyzed by XRD,SEM and EDS.The results show:1)the erosion mechanism of the used bricks is Fe erosion, different from the traditional slag erosion mechanism. The Fe erosion mechanism is expressed as follows.During the RH refining, molten steel which would infiltrated into the brick along the porosity, crack,or grain boundary contacts the working face of magnesia spinel for a long time.On the surface of the brick,Fe was oxidized to FeO which reacts with MgO to form(Mg,Fe)Orings.During the refining clearance, the oxygen partial pressure changes, leading to Fe2+translate into Fe3+and MgFe2O4 dissolve from the reaction rings. The process is accompanied by volume expansion, which resulted in MgO dissolution.2)On the basis of iron erosion,a new type of magnesia spinel brick has been developed by introducing composite additives.Compared with the magnesite chrome bricks, the new type of magnesia spinel brick has better comprehensive performance and 1.5-2times furnace life.
