Influence of Ta Content on Prior Particle Boundary Precipitation in the as-HIPed Powder Metallurgy Superalloy

Powder metallurgy(PM)has become increasingly attractive as a processing technique for advanced nickelbased superalloys.Prior particle boundary(PPB)is one of the main potential defects in the as-HIPed PM superalloys, which weakened the metallurgy connection between powders. In FGH4098 alloy without Ta,there is a large number of PPB.PPB is mainly composed of MC type carbides, which is rich in Ti and Nb.With the increase of Ta content, the(Ti,Nb)C will transform into(Ta,Ti,Nb)C,and the problem of PPB is solved.(Ta,Ti,Nb)C is mainly precipitated inside the powder particles and not along the powder surface.Due to the smaller diffusion coefficient of Ta than Ti and C,carbides with Ta are difficult to diffuse to the surface of the powder during HIP,which helps to inhibit the generation of PBB.
