Influence of SiC on Magnetic and Mechanical Properties of Hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B Magnets

High-speed motors need the Nd-Fe-B magnets with high strength as well as high magnetic properties. But Nd-Fe-B magnets are brittle and have lower strength, especially for the hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets, which greatly limit its further application in dynamic conditions. To improve the strength of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets,SiC nanoparticles are used and SiC-doped Nd2Fe14B magnets have been fabricated by hot-pressing and hot-deformation process. The microstructure, bending strength and magnetic properties have been investigated systematically.Compared with the as-deformed Nd2Fe14B magnet, the SiC/Nd2Fe14B composite magnets revealed substantial enhancement in bending strength and the magnetic properties were affected little. The results indicate that up to 30%bending strength enhancement has been achieved in the SiC/Nd2Fe14B composite magnets with 0.5 wt.%SiC comparing with the pure Nd2Fe14B magnets. But when the amount of SiC is more than 0.5 wt.%,the bending strength started to decrease with the increase of SiC amount. We found that SiC nanoparticles were distributed in the intergranular boundary. The improvement of mechanical properties is attributed to the high strength of SiC and the strengthening mechanism is the crack deflection.
