Oxygen Content Control in ppm Level of Nickel/Cobalt-based Alloy Powders Made by Vacuum Atomization and the Influence on Oxidation Resistance

High quality Ni/Col based alloy coatings for high-temperature oxidation resistance requires high purity especially low chemical contamination.Oxygen is one common contaminate easy brought in during powder manufacturing.Vacuum atomization is one of advanced powder producing technique for low level contamination, for instance the oxygen content can be controlled at 100 ppm level. In this study,The oxygen content controlling by vacuum atomization process is compared with those by other manufacture techniques.Ni/Co based alloy powders made by those techniques were tested with chemical composition control especially for oxygen content. The powders were tested at high temperatures(1100℃)in vacuum and air environment. The influence of the oxygen content on the oxidation behavior of the powders was analyzed. The associated microstructure evolution was characterized by microstructure study. The result showed that the surface of the powders was oxidized by forming alumina scale and other oxides(spinels,Ta oxides, etc). The elemental behavior in the vacuum and air conditions was discussion in this paper.
