Influence of Particle Size on the Compaction Mechanics of AISI 316L Powder Uni-axially Cold Compacted

The constitutive model of AISI 316L powder was derived in previous work by means of the data continuously recorded by an industrial press.Different densities and geometries were investigated. This work focuses the attention on the influence of particle size.AISI 316L powder, sieved in three different particle size, from coarser to finer, was used to produce ring shaped specimens characterized by different H/(Dext – Dint)ratios.1%wt Acrawax was added as lubricant, specimens were compacted up to 6.5 g/cm3 green density.Processing the data recorded during single action experiments, the parameters characterizing compaction mechanics were derived for each different particle size, such as friction coefficients with die and core walls, flow stress curve and radial stress transmission coefficient,as functions of the mean relative density. The related constitutive models were thus obtained and compared to the constitutive model of the standard powder.
