Evaluation of High Performance Premixes in the Manufacturing of VVT Components

The production of hydraulically activated VVT(Variable Valve Timing)components such as rotors and stators require high levels of dimensional precision. This represents an additional challenge for parts manufacturers relying on the powder metallurgy process. To reach this level of precision in the compaction of stators, several production steps must be carefully controlled to avoid problems such as part deformation during sintering and out-of-tolerance inner or outer diameter.Mastering the key production parameters requires the combined expertise of the powder metallurgy parts manufacturer and the metal powder supplier. This article demonstrates how the contribution of optimized steel powder premixes coupled with state-of-the-art manufacturing can meet the stringent requirements of VVT stators production.A steel powder premix produced by Rio Tinto Metal Powders was evaluated in production conditions on variables such as: part weight stability, density gradient, dimensional control and mechanical properties.
