Effect of Dwell Time on Crystallization and Sintering Behavior of Al-Gd-Ni-Co Amorphous Powders
The influence of dwell time(1 to 120 min)on the sintering and crystallization behavior of Al84Ni7Gd6Co3 glassy powders during sintering has been studied by hot pressing the amorphous powders within the supercooled liquid region. The dwell time significantly influences the densification process: decreases the porosity level and increases the density by Al-diffusion along the particle interface. The dwell time influences the amount of crystalline phases in the amorphous matrix, and the subsequent crystallization of the retained glassy phase. It shows that with increasing dwell time, the thermal stability of the residual amorphous phase in the hot pressed samples increases. The results indicate that dwell time is a vital to control the densification behavior and microstructure of the high strength Al-based alloys produced by powder metallurgy from amorphous powders.
