Metallic Glass for Arc Welding Application
Metallic glass is a new class of material and it has gained myriad of technological interest owing to its novel properties such as high hardness, strength and chemical resistance. In this study,we reported an iron-based metallic glass as a novel filling material for joining of steels.Based on a high pressure inert gas atomization method,we produced near spherical shape and amorphous structure metallic glass powder for the arc-welding joining application. The joining of high performance steels such as austenitic-ferritic stainless steels is of high metallurgical complexity, and requires stringent control to obtain optimum mechanical properties. The arc welding was carried out to study the weldability of metallic glass for stainless steel. The materials were studied with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, tensile tests and Vickers microhardness. Our results showed that metallic glass is brittle failure as compared to the conventional filling materials. In terms of weldability, metallic glass has shown the potential as a filler material for arc welding.
