Effects of Powder Type and Sintering Condition on the Properties of MIM Kovar
The low thermal expansion coefficient alloys such as Kovar(Fe29Ni17Co)have been widely produced using the wrought process. With the advantage of saving machining costs,MIM has been used to make Kovar parts with complicated shapes. This study compares the results of using different powders(prealloyed powder vs.mixed powder)and different sintering conditions(vacuum vs.hydrogen vs.dissociated ammonia). The products obtained have a density greater than 7.86 g/cm3,a hardness of HRB 65~75,and a thermal expansion coefficient of about 5.1 × 10-6/K.The effects of the powder type and processing variable on the microstructure and physical properties are discussed. The data show that MIM is a capable production process for making Kovar parts.
