Niobium Carbide Based Cermets with Secondary Carbide and Carbonitride Addition
In this study, the influence of Ni binder content(5 to 20 vol%)and carbide/carbonitride additions(up to 43.5 vol%)on the microstructure and mechanical properties of NbC-Ni matrix cermets were investigated.NbC cermets with Mo2C,WC or combinations of Mo2C,WC and Ti(C0.7N0.3)were prepared by conventional liquid phase sintering in vacuum at 1420℃.Analysis results indicated that the partial replacement of NbC by the additions had a significant effect on the NbC grain growth,Vickers hardness as well as flexural strength of the fully densified NbC-Ni based cermets. The Ti(C0.7N0.3)-free NbC cermets were composed of more homogeneous cubic NbC or(Nb,Me)C solid solution carbides, whereas clear core-rim structured NbC grains were observed in cermets with Ti(C0.7N0.3)addition.The microstructure and mechanical properties,i.e.hardness,fracture toughness and flexural strength of both NbC-based material classes were evaluated.
