Development of the ERS Process for the Fabrication of Titanium Components

  ERS(Electric Resistance Sintering)is a low-cost alternative to Spark Plasma Sintering(SPS).In the developed process the duration of the cycles is very short(seconds)and without protective atmosphere.These features allow an easy industrialization of the process.In general,protective atmosphere is required in the processing of Ti alloys due to the high reactivity of titanium with oxygen.However,in ERS the process is very short and it is believed that oxygen contamination can be almost avoided.This paper shows the processing of different titanium alloys by ERS: pure titanium,Ti-6Al-4V(alpha+beta alloy)and Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta(beta alloy).The characterization of the products includes the microstructural analysis,elastic modulus and bending strength.In addition,oxygen content of the obtained materials was analyzed in detail.An external oxidation of the materials was observed; however,the internal oxidation of the samples can be avoided.It was possible to obtain full densification of the compacts and mechanical properties show interesting results.The main innovation of this work is the sintering of titanium alloys in few seconds and without protective atmosphere.The process used is a variation of ERS technology called Hybrid ERS,which permits the fabrication of larger pieces than the conventional one.Compared to Spark Plasma Sintering,this method is faster and without protective atmosphere.In comparison with EDS(Electro Discharge Compaction),larger and more homogeneous pieces can be obtained.The hybrid technology is an ultrafast process but with the use of a combination of currents.Hybrid ERS could be an interesting technique for the fabrication of small titanium components.
