An affordable small calibrated hot box suitable for thermal performance measurement of a glazing unit
This paper presents a small affordable calibrated hot box built at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, the University of Nottingham.Whilst no specific European Standards are available for the small calibrated hot box,at cost of approximately GBP 10,000 the design, development and utilisation of the hot box were performed by taking into account almost all the requirements outlined in the ISO 8990 and ISO 12567 standards. The hot box comprises of three components namely; the metering box,the specimen panel and the cold box.The box is designed by taking into account the minimum requirement for the metering area according to ISO 8990(1m × 1m)and the maximum size of the window that can be tested is 1.2m × 1.2m.In order to ensure uniform air circulation at the air speed requirement specified in ISO 12567,a baffle with a series of 12 Vdc fans was installed in each of the cold and hot area.Additionally, the minimum number of temperature sensors per unit area in measuring the thermal transmittance of the window/glazing unit have also been considered.Innovative heating and cooling elements were introduced in the design of the hot box using two separate units of thermoelectric(TEC)air to air heat pump at 102 W capacity, capable to achieve 3℃ to 45℃ in the cold and hot enclosure respectively. The TEC heat pump is controlled by a proportional-integral-derivative controller(PID controller)connected to a PC with a user interface.Meanwhile the speed of the installed fans were controlled via Pulse Width Modulation(PWM)controller.Prior to specimen testing,by following closely several standards such as ISO 12567 standards and ISO 8990,the hotbox was calibrated using materials of known thermal transmittance property sandwiched between materials of emissivity which are similar to the window/glazing specimen. This paper serves as concise guidance documents that outline the methodology in the design, development, calibration and finally in the specimen testing using the calibrated hot box.
