Thermal Utilization of Sewage Sludge with Recovery of Energy and Recycling of Phosphorus (P) as Fertilizer
Legal restrictions and the soon expected shortage of phosphorus(P)as a critical raw material are promoting the development of new technologies for the thermal utilization of sewage sludge(SS)with recovery of energy in co-incineration plants(e.g.cement kiln, lignite fired power stations and municipal waste incinerators)as well as the recycling of phosphorus from sewage sludge ash, produced by mono-incineration in fluidized bed combustion plants. In this contribution,an overview is given of the numerous processes developed for phosphorus recycling as fertilizer in agriculture, when different process streams of a municipal waste water treatment plant are used as feedstock material. It will be shown that by using dried sewage sludge or sewage sludge 0ash,recycling rates up to 90%can be reached. Finally, the wet chemical acid digestion based TetraPhos-process of REMONDIS and the thermochemical/metallurgical related RecoPhos-process of MontanuniversitaetLeobenare reported and described.
