Effect of Vermicomposting on Physicochemical Properties and Carbon Structure Changes of Cattle Manure

With the increase of livestock in terms of scale and intensification, the large quantity of wastes produced and directly discharged by farms have become a major source of environmental pollution, this has become a serious problem. In this study, natural composting and vermicomposting were compared to investigating the effects of using earthworms to dispose of cattle dung. The physicochemical properties and carbon structures during vermicomposting were analyzed for explaining this phenomenon. We found that the mineralization rate and available nutrient content significantly improved during vermicomposting. The available P and K increased from day 20.When compared to natural composting, total and organic C and total N decreased significantly during vermicomposting. The analysis of the 13C-CP/MAS NMR spectra showed that during vermicomposting the aliphatic carbon was broken down and high molecular weight component increased.Alkoxy carbon and aromatic carbon increased, whereas the carbonyl carbon decreased. This proves that the core humic acid components combine or condense with other substances to form macromolecules during vermicomposting.
