Effects of Muti-walled Carbon Nanotubeson Anaerobic Process inAcetate Degrading Cultures

Muti-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)with the performance of unique structure, mechanical property have attractedmore attention.CNTs negativeeffects onmicrobial cells, especially microbial activity have been reported. In this study, sludge waspre-incubated anaerobically for 40 days to reduce alternative electron acceptors.2-13C acetate(99%13C)was added to explore the response of methanogenic sludge with MWCNTs in anaerobic digestion process. Results show that MWCNTshad significant influence on the methane production rate.On the contrary, themethane yield was little change. In the anaerobic sludge,DNA-based stableisotope probing(SIP)analysis revealed that the Clostridium and Methanobacterium were intensivelylabeled with 13C in the reactor with MWCNTs.Meanwhile, the degradation rate of acetate was little affected at high H2 partial pressure with the presence of MWCNTs.Thesephenomenaprobably resulted from MWCNTsserving as electron conduits promote direct interspecieselectron transfer(DIET)between anaerobic fermentative bacteria and methanogens in thesystem. Our results provide useful information to understand theresponse of methane emissions toMWCNTs in anaerobic environment.
