DURABILITY STUDY OF FRPS SUBJECTED TO HYDROTHERMAL ENVIRONMENTS
Fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)composites have been widely applied in civil engineering,e.g.,strenghening concrete structures or FRP bar reinforcement. The long term performances of FRPs in harsh environments have been considered as a serious concern from the beginning of the application. In the present paper,a carbon reinforced polymer(CFRP)plate was investigated on the durability performances in terms of water uptake, mechanical properties, and the microstructures. The aim of the study is to reveal which components of the CFRP plays the key role on the property evolution in hydrothermal environments. As shown, the fiber-resin bonding is very susceptible to the water immersion, leading to the degradation of CFRP.Based on the finding, the possible degradation mechanisms were proposed.
