BEHAVIOUR OF SHORT RECTANGULAR CONCRETE COLUMNS CONFINED WITH CFRP WRAPS

Compressive strength and ultimate strain of concrete gains significant increase once it is confined by using fibre reinforced polymer(FRP)composites. Most of the studies have reported the gain in normal strength concretes with strengths ranging from 35 to 60 MPa.Very limited research on effectiveness of confinement provided by FRP on low strength has been reported. Results of an experimental study are presented in this paper on the behaviour of concentrically loaded short concrete columns of low concrete strength confined with CFRP wraps.A total of ten(10)short rectangular concrete columns were tested.Four unconfined columns, two plain and two reinforced concrete, were used as control specimens.Remaining six columns were confined with externally bonded CFRP wraps using different confining schemes that were defined on the basis of results obtained by the authors in another study on short square columns of smaller cross section.Effect of different confinement schemes on the load carrying capacities was studied by loading the columns concentrically in uniaxial compression. All confinement schemes resulted in enhancement of load carrying capacities of confined concrete columns indicating effectiveness of externally bonded CFRP wraps in improved performance of short rectangular concentrically loaded concrete columns.
