AXIAL CRUSHING BEHAVIOR OF MACROSPHERE SYNTACTIC FOAM COLUMNS CONFINED WITH FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER JACKETS
Syntactic foams consisting of hollow glass macrospheres embedded in a resin matrix represent a promising solution for structures requiring both enhanced structural and energy absorption capabilities. In this paper,an innovative syntactic foam column confined with glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP)jacket is proposed to optimize the cost-effective crashworthiness and compressive resistance.A series of static compression experiments were conducted to investigate the crashworthiness and load capacity of syntactic foam columns confined with GFRP jackets. The influences of FRP wall thickness and fiber volumes in the longitudinal and circumferential proportion on the crushing behavior and failure mode were discussed.
