P96-EFFECT OF BOLT PRELOAD ON BEARING STRENGTH OF A SINGLE BOLTED CONNECTION OF GFRP MEMBERS
Mechanical behavior and capacity of bolted connections of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)members are not thoroughly understood yet, which prevents FRP from being widely accepted as a structural material. This study focuses on bearing strength of bearing-type bolted connections of GFRP members.Past studies have reported the introduction of bolt preload leads to the increase of bearing strength of a bolted connection although current design guidelines usually do not rely on the bolt preload and assume a pin-bearing condition. To examine the relationship between bolt preload and bearing strength of bolted connections,an experimental study on single bolted connections with different levels of preload was conducted. The connectoin configuration of test specimens was a double lap configuration with a 12-mm thick GFRP main plate, two 6-mm thick stainless steel splice plates, and a single stainless bolt of M16.The bolt preload was varied by changing the tightening torque from 0 N?m to 150 N?m.As a result of a series of experiments,it was found that bearing strength significantly increased when the tightening torque changed from 0 N?m to 3 N?m which corresponds to a manually fastened condition.A further increase in the tightening torque from 3 N?m resulted in a slight increase of bearing strength.
