Source and composition of sedimentary organic matter in the head part of the Three Gorges Reservoir:A multiproxy approach using δ13Corg,lignin phenols and lipid biomarker analyses

Multiproxy approaches including bulk OC,δ13C,lignin phenols and lipid biomarker analyses were applied to characterize the sedimentary organic matter(OM)source and compsoition in the head part of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The OM is consisted both natural(autochthonous vs.allochthonous)and anthropogenic inputs. The natural OM includes inputs from the vascular plants input especially the non-woody angiosperms. The allochthonous input include the planktonic producitivy and microbial production likely due to localized eutrophication.Anthropogenic inputs likely derive from petroleum input and/or urban activities.Other anthropogenic inputs are from untreated sewage waste. These influences were found to be regionally specific as controlled by point sources of pollution based on the relative distributions measured and on the fact that the molecular characteristics of sedimentary OM were not distributed smoothly along a gradient.
