Stable isotope signatures of disequilibrium states in a complex system

Living systems are characterized as open systems, which exchange energy and matter with the environment. It is expected that life should be intrinsically out of equilibrium among stable isotope compositions(e.g.δ13C or δ15N) of its many components. However, the intrinsic reversibility of enzymatic reactions should in principle lead some biomolecules among or within themselves to approach or be in isotope equilibrium,at least locally or transiently. If such disequilibrium can be quantified or local equilibrium can be identified, the reversibility of enzymatic reactions and the factors that control the reversibility may be identified, quantified, and understood.
