Research on the anammox and denitrification potential rates in the sediments of two different trophic lakes in the Taihu Lake

  Anammox and denitrification are important nitrogen removal pathways in the sediments,of which denitrification could reduce nitrate to N2,and anammox could concurrently transform ammonium and nitrite to N2 in sedimentary environments.In the present study,with the slurry incubation experiment,anammox and denitrification potential rates and their contributions to the nitrogen loss in the sediments in the Meiliang Lake(medium eutrophication)and the Xu Lake(mesotrophication)of the Taihu Lake were quantified with labeled 15NH4+and 15NO3-based on isotope pairing technique.The main results were as follows.(1)Denitrification potential rates in the sediments of Meiliang Lake and the Xu Lake were 15.95 and 19.29μmolN2·kg-1·h-1,and the anammox potential rates were 1.71 and 0.59μmolN2·kg-1·h-1,respectively.(2)The total nitrogen removal potential rates in the two lakes were 17.66 and 19.88μmolN2·kg-1·h-1,while the contribution of anammox to the total nitrogen removal(ra)in the Meiliang Lake(10%)was higher than that in the Xu Lake(3%).(3)The abundance of nirS and hzo genes and the content of organic matter had great impact on the ra.The content of organic matter in the Meiliang Lake was lower than that in the Xu Lake,and the hzo gene abundance was higher than that in the Xu Lake.The value of ra increased with the increase of the hzo gene abundance,while decreased with the increase of the content of organic matter.
