Legacy effects of soil temperature in the off-rice season on CH4 emissions during the growth season in a paddy soil

Rice cropping system serves as a significant source of increased atmospheric CH4 concentration.Comprehensive estimation of CH4 emissions from rice paddies requires the understanding of integrated relationship between the environmental factors and CH4 fluxes. In this study,3 rice paddies were selected to monitor CH4 fluxes and soil environmental factors from August 2012 to December 2015.The results of this study showed that the increased soil temperature during the off-rice season dramatically increased CH4 emissions during the growing season, resulting from enhanced aerobic and anaerobic decomposition of soil organic carbon. The increased soil temperature in off-season produced large amounts of carbon substrate such as acetate for methanogens during the subsequent rice growing season. These results revealed the legacy effect of soil temperature in off-rice season on CH4 emissions during the growth season, stimulating CH4 emissions from rice paddies.
