Spatial variations of soil water content in deep loess profiles in the critical zone of the Loess Plateau,China
Soil water plays an important role in hydrological process,vegetation growth and ecosystem health in the Loess Plateau(LP)of China.However,there are few reports addressing spatial variations of soil water content in the entire soil profile from surface to bedrock in the critical zone of the LP due to variations of loess thickness(50-200 m)and difficulties in sample collection.In this study,five representative sites(Yangling,Changwu,Fuxian,Ansai and Shenmu)from south to north in the LP were selected to collect soil samples from the top of loess to bedrock.Gravimetric soil water content(SWC)in the entire soil profile was determined.Results showed that SWC in the entire soil profile strongly fluctuated with depth.Average profile SWC generally decreased from south to north following precipitation gradient,exhibiting an obvious latitude zonal pattern.Furthermore,SWC within different sampling sites had different sensitivity to precipitation.SWC in the central and northern parts of the LP had higher sensitivity than the southern region.This study is an initial study on investigating variations in SWC from the top of loess to bedrock in the critical zone of the LP.The results of this study are of significance for understanding the relationships among precipitation,soil water and groundwater in the critical zone of the LP.
