Persistenc measurement in the field by chemical benchmarking

Persistence is one of the core criteria for exposure and hazard assessment. It is used in various existing frameworks to classify one chemical to be persistent. It is normally expressed as a degradation half-life in a single medium such as air, water or sediment.Currently most of the persistence measurements are conducted in the laboratory. However, persistence is not an intrinsic chemical property but influenced by environmental conditions. To measure persistence in the field is challenging because of the complexity and variation of the real environment. There is no standard method to assess the persistence of chemicals in the field. We recently came up with a method to measure the persistence of chemicals in real lakes, called chemical benchmarking that uses the concentration ratios between two chemicals(benchmark and test)in the inlet and outlet of the lake.
