Development of Hydraulic Regeneration Mechanism to Harvest Human Walking Induced Energy

Human walking induces a lot of mechanical energy available for harvest. It is promising to use such energy to solve the energy supply problem of wearable robotic equipment such as exoskeleton. So it is very useful and energy-saving to design the energy regeneration mechanism based on fluid transmission principle. In this paper,we firstly use Vicon gait analysis system to investigate the human walking dynamics to explore the variation of energy produced by human walking with gait cycle time. The rotation angle of ankle joint, knee joint and hip joint in walking process was obtained for modeling. The magnitude of the ground reaction force in the horizontal and vertical directions is obtained. In order to get the maximum energy from human walking motion, the regeneration mechanism is designed and the energy recovery results are considered by simulation. It is shown that the maximum output power of the regeneration mechanism is nearly 30 watts, significant to power the wearable robotic systems.
