Tribological Study on Reciprocating Contact of Hydraulic Spool Valve Fabricated Using Additive Manufacturing

Selective laser melting(SLM),as one type of metal additive manufacturing technology, was used to manufacture a hydraulic proportional valve.A valve spool(18Ni-300)with hollow structure was fabricated to increase the resolution of the valve. The contact between the valve spool and body is crucial.which relates to the reliability and performance of a hydraulic valve. The paper studied the reciprocating contact of a spool valve produced by SLM from a tribological aspect.By varying laser processing parameters, porous and fully densified spool samples were produced using SLM.Various contact pressure and frequency was applied through a scaled reciprocating contact rig. Results indicate that spool samples with large pores increase the friction while the spool samples with small pores reduce friction and wear. However, many other performances of the SLMed parts need to be considered and the materials need to be evaluated before the technology can be applied in reality.
