CHARACTERISTICS OF PET FIBRIDS BY PRECIPITATION

  As a new product of differentiated fibers,polyethylene terephthalate(PET)fibrid prepared by precipitation was widely used in reinforced composite materials because of its excellent strength,heat resistance,small size and controllable dimensions.The size,surface morphology,degree of crystallinity and thermal properties of Lab-made PET fibrid were studied by using Paul Sieve Shakers,fiber quality analyzer,scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray diffractometer(XRD)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).Results indicated that the size distribution of PET fibrid was conformable,the length of 0.20-0.80 mm accounted for more than 83%,width of 0.5-4 μm.It is ribbon-like in shape,and had wrinkled surface.Due to the advantages of the precipitation process of preparing the fibrid,PET fibrid exhibit improved thermal properties and crystallinity than the commercial PET pulp.Its crystallinity is 37.88%,the crystal size is 6 nm.The initial decomposition temperature of fibrid was 365℃,the maximum rate of decomposition at 438℃,thus demonstrated its stable molecular structure and excellent thermal properties.The unique morphological characteristics and good thermal properties of PET fibrid can be used in wet forming for paper,filter materials and other fields.
