EFFECT OF LIGNIN CONTENT IN INDIVIDUAL LIGNOCELLULOSIC FIBER ON ITS STIFFNESS AND PHYSICAL STRENGTH PROPERTIES
Lignocellulosic fiber has been increasingly used in many fields. The stiffness and physical strength properties of lignocellulosic fibers, affected significantly by the lignin content, have an important effect on the properties of fiber-based materials. In this study, the stiffness and physical strength properties of lignocellulosic fibers with different lignin contents were evaluated at the cellular level. The results showed that the lignin removal led to the decrease of both fiber strength and fiber stiffness whatever in dry state or wet state. As the lignin content reduced from 24.28%to 2.67%,the breaking load of the fibers decreased from 129.79 mN to 94.42 mN,and the breaking stress decreased from 282.79 MPa to 205.12 MPa,correspondingly.Lignin removal loosened the fiber micro-structure,and thus decreased the single fiber strength. The fiber stiffness determined by indirectly method in wet state reduced significantly from 19.37×10-13 to 1.83×10-13 N·m2,although the stiffness of the fibers determined by direct method in dry state reduced very slightly. This indicated that the lignin removal did not affect the fiber stiffness directly, but resulted in a loosened fiber cell wall, further increased the accessible water to micro fibrils(increased fiber swelling capability),finally reduced the fiber stiffness.
