FACTORS INFLUENCING METHANOL RELEASE DURING WHITE CARDBOARD TESTING
Because of most of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)are toxic, their content in the products, especially for the human contact materials, have been regulated in many countries. As a member of VOCs,methanol in white cardboard has been strictly restricted(< 3 mg·m-2)by the tobacco industry in China. This study provided an understanding of the factors on methanol release behaviors during the pulp or white cardboard testing by headspace gas chromatographic(HS-GC)technique.The results showed that the types of pulp(lignin content),water content and oxygen involved in the test have a significant effect on the methanol release from samples during the testing. The larger volume of glycerol triacetate can reduce the detection sensitivity for the VOCs analysis in the current HS-GC method. Therefore,it is important to address these points in order to have a unified standard procedure on the methanol testing of white cardboard papers.
